Sometimes kids say certain things because they know they can get a rise out of us. When addressing any inappropriate behavior, it's helpful to determine why the child is exhibiting that behavior.

Understanding why your child is exhibiting a certain behavior will lead you to a better solution to deal with the that behavior. For example: If you determined that your child is just trying to get your attention by saying, "Shut up," then it would be appropriate for you to ignore the "shut up" and give him positive reinforcement when he says things that are appropriate.
