Research shows
that the early years of life are one of the most important
and critical periods in a persons life because what a
child learns the first few years of life last a lifetime.
Since a child’s brain develops dramatically after
birth it is really important that the experiences and
treatment the child is exposed to are positive and healthy
experiences and treatment. During the first years of life
the brain is being “wired” for sight, sound,
hearing, trust, behavior patterns, thinking ability, etc
through the experiences or treatment a child receives.
A baby needs experiences that will turn on the “wiring”
into positive connections.
Positive connections are needed for healthy social-emotional
development which is the foundation for healthy behaviors.
Because children learn what they live it is important
for the parent to help them grow and develop in the most
healthful way possible. To help your baby grow and develop:
. Provide comfort when they are upset or crying
. Play with your baby . Show your baby how special
he or she is by reading, interpreting, and responding
to their cues (nonverbal signals). Cues are how a baby
lets you know what he or she needs . Talk to your
baby. Babies develop vocabulary when they are talked to
. Smile at your baby . Set daily routines for
your baby . Provide the age appropriate foods
. Tell your baby you love him or her
