In many
ways Guilford Child Development represents the spirit
of Greensboro! The organization’s beginning is rooted
in action -- action that transcends race, religion, and
socio-economic status to fill an unmet need in the community.
Originally founded as United Day Care Services in 1967,
Guilford Child Development was started specifically to
provide child care services for the growing number of
working mothers. Its first licensed day care center, Hampton
Homes, began caring for 20 children and was complemented
by a food planning, purchase and preparation service.
From that first child care center, Guilford Child Development
now operates 11child development centers, and we operate four of only seven such centers in Guilford County, public or private,
that are fully accredited by the National Association
for the Education of Young Children.
Fostered by an active public-private partnership over
the past 40 years, the agency has continuously evolved
to meet the growing needs of a diverse community. Today,
a staff of 315, enables Guilford Child Development to
deliver family-centered child development programs for
children from birth to age five, for pregnant women, and
for fathers through a variety of programs including Early
Head Start, Head Start, Nurse-Family Partnership,
Catering for Kids, and the Regional Child Care Resources and Referral
Program.
Throughout our history, we’ve learned that being
part of a firm foundation that helps children become healthy,
respectful, productive citizens really does make a difference
in our communities.
